The lastest data I see is solar and wind are > 11% of energy. But burning clear cut forests shipped in from overseas is as bad as burning coal and also counts as renewable energy. Palm, corn, soy, plastic and paper all get burned for green electricity or bio-diesel. Hydro is counted green and is one of the most wildlife destructive forces there are. Our 2030 wind turbine plans = 800 tons of coal says Vaclav Smil. China pours more concrete in 2 years than the US did in 100. Here, people are bracing for hunger and riots.

By the time we reach 80% of renewable electricity from solar and wind, electricity will be 30% of global energy use. In a perfect world. 80% solar and wind by 2050 will be herculean enough without the criss-cross patchwork of supply chain threats. Threats like mass violence. Like hunger and thirst. The more efficient batteries become, the more they’re in demand. Rare earth production is only profitable in countries who ignore water and wildlife harm. The more batteries are in demand, the more land water and wildife die. The more demand the more threat of shortages. Battery and bio-energy extraction means we’re going to double down on intensive extraction in areas in need of double down wildlife protection.
